The Crew That Knocked on Your Door

Not everyone who knocks after a storm is a problem. Some are perfectly good companies working hard in a busy week. The checks below cost you five minutes and separate the two.

Photographs and a written scope. If the honest answer is that it can wait another season, you will get that answer.

Side by side

CategoryUsA Door-Knocking Storm Chaser
LicenceVerifiable with the state, and ours to give youAsk. Then actually check it
Local addressFort Lauderdale, year roundOften out of state, gone by December
Who you call in year threeSame company, same numberFrequently nobody
Availability right after a stormHonest queue, sometimes weeksImmediate. They win here
Assignment of benefitsWe do not ask for oneOften the first thing presented
Deposit before workProgress payments against a written scopeLarge deposit up front is a warning sign
"We can cover your deductible"That is insurance fraud in FloridaIf offered, walk away
Written scope with photographsStandardSometimes a single-line estimate

Each row marked “wins here” is a genuine advantage of the alternative. A table that gives the other side nothing is an advertisement wearing a table's clothes.

Our view

The honest verdict

If you need a tarp today and we are three days out, take the tarp from whoever can do it — that is a genuine advantage and stopping water matters more than loyalty. What you should not do in that first week is sign an assignment of benefits, hand over a large deposit, or accept an offer to have your deductible waived. That last one is not a favour; it is a felony you would be party to.

Next step

Find out what is actually wrong with it.

An inspection, photographs of what we found, and a written scope. If the honest answer is that it can wait another season, that is the answer you will get.
