A roofing-only contractor is usually faster and cheaper on a straightforward roof, and for a simple tear-off and re-roof that is the right call. They do this every day, their crews are dedicated to it, and there is no reason to pay for coordination you do not need.
Where it goes wrong
It stops working when the roof is not the only problem. Rotten decking, a failed truss end, a wall junction or a stucco detail sits outside a roofing license, and the job stalls while a second trade is found. On an occupied building that pause is the expensive part, not the repair.

The honest verdict
If your roof needs a roof, hire a roofer. Call a general contractor when the water has been getting in long enough that the roof is no longer the whole job — soaked framing, a ceiling to rebuild, a wall to open up. The moment a project needs three trades, having one contract instead of three is worth real money and considerably less of your time.
